Maps

Trail Guides and the agencies also have maps, but maps you can buy and some computer mapping include:

Tom Harrison Maps: Updated versions of USGS topographically maps. They show the status of the trails and roads and are generally quite accurate. Maps for the Santa Monica Mountains, San Gabriels Mountains and other California recreational areas.

National Geographic Trails Illustraded Santa Monica Mountains. A topographic map that shows the official trails and roads, but doesn't show old trails and roads; so navigating with this map which doesn't show everything that is on the ground can be difficult.

National Geographic California TOPO on computer. At present, they use ancient NSGS topographic maps which don't have changes made in the last several decades, but you can plot your routes and get elevations gains.

And the latest and greatest is Google maps on line and for PCs (not Macs as of this writing). Great for looking at what's on the ground, particularly if not heavily forested. A fun time eater.

This is not a complete list by any means. The biggest problem with on-line mapping for mountain bikers is that streets and highways are listed, but try and find a trail or trail head. And we usually don't even know what town it's in if it's in one at all.

Trail Guides

Steve's guide to trails in Ventura County is impressive and covers some LA County trails too.

Singletrack Mind Trail descriptions, maps, GPS files, photos of So Cal Mtb Rides. An excellent, thorough site.

“Best Mountain Biking Trails in Southern California” A photographic display of Southern California’s mountain biking trails and trail descriptions.

Gorp—Santa Monica Mountains Sullivan Ridge/[Will Rogers] Backbone Trail and Paseo Miramar/Topanga Loop [AKA: Trailer Canyon]. Good maps of the two trails. Otherwise the Gorp site promises a lot, but delivers little.
